The Center for REALTOR® Technology is currently investigating Software PBX technology for use within the National Association of REALTORS® and the larger REALTOR® community. The messenger project is a result of these investigations.

Messenger got it's start when a CRT/Homestore survey revealed that it took approximately 7 days for agents to respond to an email lead. The thought was that agents would respond in a more timely manner to a phone call.

The original Messenger project was built with the capability to interact with a complex peer-to-peer(P2P) technology as well as route messages. While it worked in both capacities it was apparent the P2P component added complexity detrimental to ease of use and configuration. In light of this the project was rebuilt without the P2P component. The new system is easier to install and administer.

All the software used on these projects is open source and freely available on the internet. That software includes the Apache web server and the Asterisk PBX ; from the website," Asterisk is a complete PBX in software. It runs on Linux, BSD and MacOS and provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX and more. Asterisk does voice over IP in many protocols, and can interoperate with almost all standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware."

*Technical knowledge of Linux operating systems, HTML and PHP is recommended for the installation of the Messenger system.
